SUSTAINABILITY LEADERS REINTERPRET HOME AT ICFF

The Partnership for Academic Leadership in Sustainability (PALS), a consortium of 30 independent colleges of art and design founded by Pratt in 2009, will present an exhibition titled HOME_LESS_HOME in booth #3032 at the 25th annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center through Tuesday, May 21. The exhibition offers student designs that are inspired by the changing nature of urban society and the impact of climate change. Historically, social forces have contributed to homelessness on the streets of our most affluent cities. Yet, in an era of Katrina and Sandy and of rapid socio-environmental change, more Americans are redefining "home."

HOME_LESS_HOME considers the diverse ways design can complement and contribute to broader forms of social and ecological change to address the challenges posed by a warming world. The exhibition projects creative solutions that respond to our social and ecological resilience. It will feature physical design projects by students from Pratt Institute, Otis College of Art and Design, Pacific Northwest College of Art, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Emily Carr University of Art and Design. These projects include Sierra, a flexible table system; fashion designs for Six Garment Diet; Bootstrap, a mobile homeless shelter; a jacket that converts into shelter; and a full-size replica of a 64 square-foot home. The booth will also include a slide deck that features additional projects from 25 of the PALS member colleges.
